Rolf Königs named Borussia’s second ever honorary president

Borussia's long-standing former president Rolf Königs has been voted in as an honorary president following the club’s annual general meeting (AGM).

After delivering his welcome speech, Gladbach’s new president Rainer Bonhof expressed his gratitude to his predecessor Rolf Königs, who, after 20 years as president and a total of 25 years as a member of the club’s presidential board, had personally recommended Bonhof for the role. “Rolf Königs has left his mark on an era of the club’s history. His name will forever be associated with Borussia’s financial restoration, BORUSSIA-PARK, and the side’s success over recent years,” expressed Bonhof.

With this glowing review in mind, Bonhof took it upon himself to put forth Königs’ name for the role of honorary president. It was then confirmed by the members in attendance at the AGM that he would become the second person to be given the honour after Dr. Helmut Beyer. Afterwards, Bonhof made sure to also thank Hans Meyer, who had also stepped down from the presidential board, and expressed how Meyer had a “tough character” and provided “great advice and support through difficult times.” The former Borussia head coach (1999-2003 and 2008-09) was a member of the presidential board for a total of 13 years and has been an honorary member of the club since 2003.
