Borussia in Pot 4 for Champions League draw

Borussia will be in Pot 4 for the draw for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League on 1st October in Nyon.

Of the 32 sides in the draw, the eight with the lowest UEFA coefficients will be in Pot 4. The Foals’ coefficient is 26,000. The six remaining spots in the competition would have to be taken by clubs with a lower coefficient for Gladbach to be in Pot 3 like the last time the club were in the Champions League in 2016/17. In the third qualification round yesterday, however, Dynamo Kiev defeated AZ Alkamaar (2-0) and KAA Gent beat Rapid Vienna (2-1), confirming Borussia’s place in Pot 4. Both clubs have a better coefficient than Borussia and they face each other in the play-offs (22nd/23rd and 29th/30th September) for a spot in the UEFA Champions League.

As Borussia’s ball will be in Pot 4 for the draw for the UEFA Champions League group stage, Marco Rose’s side will face prestigious opposition in the group stage. Two possible groups for Borussia are Real Madrid, Manchester City and Inter Milan or Liverpool, FC Barcelona and Inter Milan. The Foals will definitely not face Stade Rennes or İstanbul Başakşehir in the group stage, as they are both in Pot 4.

Confirmed clubs and their pots:

Pot 1 Bayern Munich, Sevilla FC, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit St. Petersburg, FC Porto

Pot 2 FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Ajax

Pot 3 or 4 RB Leipzig, Inter Milan, Lazio, Atalanta

Pot 4 İstanbul Başakşehir, Stade Rennes, Borussia
